I’m tired – I didn’t sleep well last night because the thunderstorm was loud and close enough that the house would rattle. And wake me up. And startle the cats. I think it finally blew over sometime between 3-4AM.
After seeing the play on Sunday, I had the hankering to watch the 1989 movie version with Kenneth Branagh, but had absolutely no luck finding it streaming anywhere. I did, however, discover a bunch of other versions, several of which I have not seen yet. I know that times are changing, and the younger generations tend to need hooks in content to grab their attention, but I’m not pleased with the trend of modernizing Shakespearean plays. I can tolerate a few anachronisms in costuming, but seeing the whole thing “modernized” bothers me. I stumbled on one version that had costumed like the modern military and dubstep music – not my cup of tea when I want to see Shakespeare. The 1996 adaptation of Romeo and Juliet was novel and interesting, but this is a step too far for me. Frankly, I’d walk out of a performance like that, even if the star was the dude who played Jon Snow.
Anyhow, lots to do and I still need to prep to travel for my friends wedding this upcoming weekend.
