A dark day today, and it’s not the overcast skies. One of the great musicians of my life has passed and while I wouldn’t go so far as to call myself a big fan, his legacy and influence on the music I love is undisputed.
Ozzy Osbourne passed yesterday at 76.
Since I had been doing well with avoiding social media, I only heard from a friend who called randomly just to catch up: “Oh, did’ya hear Ozzy Osbourne just died?” And thus began my attempt to frantically look up information while on the phone.
I had gotten to (very briefly) meet Ozzy when I did the “Roadie for a Day” at Ozzfest back in 2001 and broke the cardinal rule of the crew interacting with the talent. I randomly bumped into him while he was shuffling along and gave an startled, “oh, hi!” The guy I was tagging along with (Omar, if my memory serves me) apologized with “sorry sir, he’s the Roadie for a Day winner.”
“Oh, well I hope you have fun,” he replied before shuffling off to wherever he was going. And that’s when Omar scolded me and told me to never engage the talent unless they engage me first. I did get to help prep the pyrotechnics for Black Sabbath’s show later that night, and all in all it was a great experience.
At least he gets to hang with Lemmy again…
