What the hell? We concluded this round’s rule of three for celebrity deaths, right? Apparently not, we also have to say goodbye to Tim Curry – taken to satisfy Death’s ravenous hunger. Or, perhaps, Hell just needed one of the world’s greatest thespians.
I can’t say that this one was unexpected. His stroke in 2012 left him looking unwell and limited his appearances. In an interview last year, he referred to dying, stating, “I will welcome it.” In his memoir Vagabond, published last October, he made a similar statement: “Sometimes, I think it would be a comfort.”
To be perfectly honest, I get that. I don’t fully comprehend all he was going through, but I do understand what it is like existing with chronic pain.
Goodbye stranger…
This one hits me the hardest so far – I mean Dolly Parton was an icon, as was Frank Beard and ZZ Top. Hayden Panettiere was a decent actress, but I really only knew her from Heroes. Tim Curry, however, was an actor I was a big fan of.
I believe my personal first experience seeing him act was when he played Rooster in Annie, but it was his role as the butler in Clue that caught my attention. That movie is a favorite, and I wanted to go to the theater multiple times to see the different endings. I saw Legend shortly after that, and he played an incredible Darkness. In high school I finally saw The Rocky Horror Picture Show and began to realize this guy’s acting chops. IT came out during that time as well, and nobody can say he wasn’t a terrifying Pennywise the Clown. From The Three Musketeers to Muppet Treasure Island, you can’t say he didn’t pour his whole heart and soul into his acting. That doesn’t even touch his voice work. There are so many roles he spoke for, I’m not going to try to list them.
So with that, it is time to say goodbye to Tim Curry. He may be gone, but his legacy will endure. I think I’m going to watch Clue again today…
