Let it be unity, let it be community…

Yesterday, besides the site going down for 12 hours, we had our plant shelf finished. I picked up the contractors from the Amish community and brought them up our hill to our property. They finished assembling it in about 10 minutes before I drove them back. There were two changes: trim the edges of the table and make the opening to the cat litterbox cubby larger. The first change was to reduce the ridge enough so we could slide a chair under the table, the second… well, our cats are well fed.

We also ordered a new litterbox for each space so they will fit properly. We needed a shorter one for the cubby built into the plant shelf, and a narrower one for the bathroom. I also ordered the shelf brackets for the bathroom since the local hardware store didn’t have any that would work (and look nice).

Driving the Amish was a new experience with some interesting conversations. I have been curious about their lifestyle for some time, and this was my first opportunity with a captive audience. We mostly talked about community and how they always look out for each other, but touched a bit on politics. I knew that for the most part, the Amish are apolitical, but there are occasions where they are willing to get involved. We also spoke about sound money and precious metals – and possible deals down the line.

They took interest in my plant giveaway project and liked the idea of the entire town community becoming more self-sufficient. I am hoping that down the line, I can work with them to give away raised bed planters as well as the plants themselves. The Amish have a lumberyard in here in town, and I believe we can work out a mutually beneficial deal.

Anyhow, I am going to take advantage of the cooler weather we are enjoying and address some outside maintenance…
