It’s the greatest comeback since Lazarus…

Went to the city yesterday so I didn’t have time to write. I was up extra-late on Monday night and ended up shutting off my alarm without even realizing it and slept in later than planned setting our schedule back a couple hours. We managed to get everything we needed accomplished, and even got to make an unplanned stop at the pawn shop (where I scored a small 4 channel mixer that I plan to use for my monitor mix).

We also stopped at our local nursery to pick up the San Marzano plants and some others for the deck (peppermint, lemon mint, lemongrass, citronella geranium) and for the front planters (some pansies and petunias). I also ended up “rescuing” a plant from Walmart.

I put that in quotes because it was less of a rescue and more general ignorance of that specific plant. We were in the checkout line and since the impulse buy display happened to be plants, I was looking them over. One was a really sad looking plant with soil that was so dry it had pulled away from the sides and was cracking. The fronds were wilted and there was a lot of browning on the dry ends. I grabbed it and took it to the garden center to see if they’d water it but the guy just took it and stuck it on the dying-but-will-sell-at-discount rack.

C’mon man, I walked across the store to get this poor thing a drink of water and you’re just gonna toss it in the dying plant pile?

Well, since it was to be discounted I asked about it and ended up buying it for pennies on the dollar and took it home to try and nurse back to health. And what did I discover when I looked up more info about Selaginella? This plant could have gone years without water and come back fine – I even have some of them in storage. This plant is also known as the “Lazarus plant” and desiccates itself during drought but once re-hydrated, will come right back and go about its business. It perked up practically instantly when I watered it at home, and this morning most of the brown tips are back to a healthy green. It has stretched out and bushed right up, and frankly looks quite healthy now.

Anyhow, I have a bunch of plants to get into their new homes so…
