What an absolutely busy weekend! I didn’t get all the transplanting done, but I did complete a significant portion, including all the tomatoes. For the giveaway, I still have basil to transplant, and I have my own project plants I’ll need to address soon as well. The electrician is coming on Thursday afternoon to install my new outdoor socket, and I hope to have the hydroponic tower built by then so I can get the romaine and bok choi seedlings in there ASAP – which reminds me, I also need to get some coco coir. The meeting with the plumber went fairly well, but I think I’m going to reach out to others as well – the guy that showed up seemed competent enough, but I didn’t much like the warranty they offer.
I also need to order a new shelf; I am going to set it up outside in front of the deck to have a place to put all the plant trays – moving from tiny peat pods to 4″ pots just consumed every bit of clear counter space… I even have to use the stove top when bringing them in overnight. I am also totally sold on the seedling sushi seed start technique – I had amazing results and the roots didn’t take any damage or shock when separating them. The problem with the cell start containers I use is that the roots tend to penetrate into the capillary fabric and break off whenever I need to lift the tray to add water or remove the plugs to transplant, but the sushi method avoids that – the roots can get long and the bubbles force the roots to spread out, providing a much stronger system to start out once transplanted.

It also allows more seedlings in a smaller space – I can fit almost as many seedlings in one roll as I can in the start trays, and the roll takes about a quarter of the space.

Anyhow, my wife just got back from her volunteer work at the food bank, so I am gonna fix up some lunch…
