It is another beautiful day out today, and my second wave of replacement tomato babies are starting to sprout. They may end up being a bit smaller than the others, but with my new grow light, I think they will likely still end up being about the same size as the ones I gave away last year. Others are starting to sprout as well – my cucumbers are emerging and the romaine lettuce did as well. The basil and bok choy are almost all sprouted and I’m seeing several other random things beginning to emerge as well.
One of our Amazon delivery drivers (who had previously delivered to us when she worked for FedEx) gave me an idea to try yesterday. I was puttering on the deck taking care of the plants when she arrived and struck up a conversation about some of the plants I was tending to. She lamented about being in an apartment with a shared small common area that her neighbor had taken over for their own garden, and she was a bit bummed about not being able to grow anything as she did not want to initiate a conflict with her neighbor over the space.
I offered a few suggestions and she brought up the upside-down hanging tomato planter that was all over infomercials years ago. I had bought a couple when in Idaho but did not like the results and had many problems with branches breaking and poor development, likely due to the weight of the fruit. I had written off using them again, but she offhandedly mentioned using it for cherry tomatoes and I think I’m going to try that. Since I’ll be moving most of the plants I keep to the new enclosure I’m planning, it will be nice to have at least one of the cherry tomato plants right there for my own grazing.
I have the plants for Toad Hollow and need to get those in the ground today so…
