Yesterday was similar to the day prior – it was overcast and chilly so I didn’t actually spend as much time in the garden as I had planned. I did the perimeter check to make sure the deer hadn’t come in again but nothing needed watering yet. I need to call the new contractor to follow up about start dates and get that fence up.
We have another city run today, but this time it’s more for fun rather than shopping or other chore type activities. Friends from my wife’s old roller derby team are coming through so we are meeting them for dinner, but will also take a bit of time to hit a few bookstores and other shops for recreation. While I’m not fond of all the people, I do enjoy the amenities of visiting the city, though I am glad it is just a visit and that we no longer live in one.
The biggest thing I miss is the live music. Even though my concert-going had tapered off over the years, the fact that there is practically nothing (aside from country or gospel) in the area is frustrating. Unfortunately our city is still often overlooked when tour managers are planning things – we live in a music desert. I know that some bigger bands stop in the city when they are on tour, but they are few and far between – which is why we had to travel out of state to see Dream Theater a few months ago.
That said, I still wouldn’t want to move from a rural environment to an urban one. I very much enjoy the quiet where we live and the fact that I can once again just walk outside at night and see the stars (and occasionally aurora borealis). And if a band we really want to see is on tour, we can just plan a trip to see them. Hell, remember I traveled across the country to see TOOL when I was having a shitty week at a shitty job I hated years ago?
Anyhow, things to do before the drive to the city…
