Shall we buy a new guitar?

Yesterday’s city trip was a bit of a bust – at least the main reason for the drive was. Despite receiving no calls nor notifications, upon arriving to get my hair cut, the barber said she had called a bit earlier and left a message to cancel because she had to take her dog for an emergency vet visit earlier and needed to go back in. While I completely understand pet emergencies, I would have been less frustrated if I had actually received a call or message, and if she wasn’t just starting to seat someone else at my 1:30 appointment time.

We also weren’t able to get into any of the “walk-in” optometrists for my wife to be able to renew her prescription and get some more contacts for our trip. (Frankly, I prefer her look when she wears glasses, but we will be wearing Venetian masks for the event and glasses don’t work well with them.

Hopefully today we’ll be able to get the haircut rescheduled to Friday as well as get appointments for eye exams at one of the supposed “walk-in” vision clinics.

But the day wasn’t a complete bust – we did get my wife’s dress hemmed, my suits picked up, and I got a new pair of dress shoes to replace the ones I had that have leather soles… since I need an option that is a bit more stable. The ones I picked are very similar but have rubber pads on the sole so I don’t have to worry about slipping (like has happened with my old shoes even before my balance issues). At least we did get some of the tasks done to prepare for our trip.

I also popped into the music shop that’s across the street from the barber and I played with a Pino Palladino signature Stingray they had just gotten in. It was a beautiful instrument, but what caught my attention the most were the strings – they were flatwound but so smooth that it seemed as if they were just a single piece. They played beautifully and felt great, even under my blistered finger. I don’t expect I’ll get the guitar itself, but I will likely pick up a set of the strings to try out, though the MSRP is $80 for a pack of the four strings. If I’m getting a new bass, it’s going to be one of my bucket list items – either a Rickenbacker 4000 Series (preferably a vintage 4001S), a Music Man John Myung Bongo 6, or any Wal I can pry out of someone’s hands.
