I accomplished a lot in the garden yesterday. I pruned the tomato foliage and removed all the daikon and basil flower spikes. As we prepare for our getaway, a neighbor will drop by this afternoon to discuss watering while we are away. I will be deep watering before we leave so there shouldn’t be much for him aside from the grow bags.
That’s another project I really need to address – an automated drip system. I want to reach the point where a smart probe and an automatic system manage the watering. This will let us take more frequent spontaneous trips without needing to wrangle a neighbor to help while away. It will also enable the use of the deep watering spikes for the plants that prefer it over surface watering.
I also need to work on the front landscaping I planned to start on this summer with the boy helping out. However, he wants nothing to do with chores, and gave up electronics to get out of all of them, so I put that on hold for now. The birds really enjoy it when I turn a sprinkler on for them in the afternoons, so having a permanent water feature available would be beneficial.
But a lot can change in just a few minutes. My wife caught the boy watching TV after willingly giving up electronics to get out of chores. So now he’s moving the wood pile I needed moved to use as the framework to contour the hill. He is angry and crying about that, but he seems more upset that someone caught him.
I guess the landscaping project is getting started this summer after all…
