Taking care of business and working overtime…

Our new lawn contractor came today, though I had it in my head that it would be Thursday. The worker is a 15-year-old gal who was driven here by her mother and is working to help her family and make some pocket cash. She had posted a tear-off flyer with her contact info at the local grocer and since I was having such difficulty scheduling our previous contractor, I thought I’d give her a shot and it worked out quite well.

For someone so young, she did a great job and had amazing attention to detail. At one point I thought she was finished but she begged me off saying there were some spots she wanted to touch up first. The only downside is that she’s just getting started out and doesn’t have all the equipment the other one had so I had to sweep up the grass bits that blew onto our pavers when she was completed.

She also forgot the key to her riding mower. I was about to suggest we reschedule Thursday (the day I thought she was arriving anyway) but her mother quietly mentioned that mowing the area with the push mower would be a good learning experience and that she probably would never forget the key again. Sure enough, she mentioned affixing it to the mower with a small chain so forgetting it would never happen again.

All in all I was pretty impressed with her attitude and drive, and that seems to be the norm with the local youth. Perhaps it is just a necessity of small town life, but the youth around here always seem to be hustling to make a buck. A far cry from the 11-year-old boy who isn’t willing to do a single chore a day, and can’t grasp the concept of coiling a hose.

Anyhow, I have sprinklers to move and hoses to coil…
