It was quite the busy weekend! I spent Friday assembling the new rack for the plants and getting that all set up – also realizing that while I can place 24 trays on the rack, having a row of trays above the next, they block the sunlight from the top to the row below… imagine that! So while this will still be quite useful moving forward, I’ll still need to rotate the plants to ensure they all get adequate sunlight.
I also rescued a butterfly – I pulled a bag of soil out of a bucket and noticed a butterfly trapped at the bottom of the bucket. It appeared lifeless, but when I pulled it out, it started moving a bit. I was debating giving it a bit of sugar water for some energy when a bit of a gust of breeze happened and that caught its attention. It quickly started pumping its wings and soon had the strength to fly off to the nearest flowers. I found its former caterpillar husk in the bottom of the bucket, so I believe it crawled in there, probably to shelter from the elements, transformed, and then couldn’t get out. I don’t know how long it was stuck, but I’m glad it had the energy to fly off and enjoy the world.
Saturday morning the Amish contractor arrived and finished the deck! Well not quite complete, we still need staining and painting, but that has to happen in a couple months when it warms up to a consistent temperature and we don’t have to worry about rain. It only took him a few more hours and once finished, we cleaned up and moved things back to their proper places making room for us to sit – and had our first meal out there enjoying the space. I expect many more in the future.
We spent most of the afternoon out there, transplanting seedlings into larger pots before the weather shifted and it started getting cold and drizzling. We scrambled to pull all the trays from the rack and then brought it all and set it back up inside. In retrospect, I should have gotten a shorter rack and also had a ramp built so I could just roll the rack with all the trays inside when necessary. After dinner, we settled in to watch the “fights.”
I haven’t really been much into MMA since the early days of the UFC, when it really was actually “mixed” martial arts. When you could see how different styles matched up against each other, there were no timed rounds, a bracket to fight through, and Royce Gracie perfected the “ground and pound.” Today’s MMA is nothing like that and not as interesting to me, but I’ll tune in for a few specific match-ups, like Rousey/Carano.
The opening fights were ok, though I missed the finish of the first one getting a drink as the fight started. However, the Rousey/Carano “fight” was not really entertaining at all. In fact, it was sort of a let down – I had hoped for at least a couple rounds before Rousey found an opening and Carano submitted. Nope, it just took seventeen seconds and was over. That said, when I expressed my disappointment, my buddy’s response took the cake, “I’m kinda jealous – wish I could pound Gina Carano for 17 seconds.”
Sunday was a cleaning day, and I spent most of the time reorganizing my office and getting it ready for the plumber and my new desk. I had hoped the desk would arrive on time (supposed to be here tomorrow or Wednesday) but it still hasn’t shipped yet, so I either may be without my desktop PC for a while, or I’m going to have to reset everything on the old desk again until the new one arrives. I got most of everything else done, but today I need to finish by tearing down my PC and preparing the space for the plumbers.
Anyhow, my wife just returned from her volunteer work and I need to finish my office…
