If I had my little way, I’d eat peaches every day…

We have an appointment to have Lucretia fixed on Friday – I’m sure she’s not going to be a happy camper, but we’ll be around over the weekend to keep her comfortable. The vet seemed to suggest that she might not have gone into full heat as it only lasted a couple days, so I’m hopeful that she’ll be taken care of in time to reduce the chances of uterine cancers in the future.

I’ve got another pot of curry simmering on the stove today – it’s one of the favorites that my wife and I both enjoy but is also pretty simple and fairly quick to get started. Get it started in the morning and let it simmer all day, and by the evening you’ll have a delicious meal with only about a half hour of work (aside from the occasional stirring that’s necessary to keep it from burning on the bottom).

I’m eager to make fukujinzuke (Japanese pickles made from daikon radish that is often eaten with the curry) this season. I had planted and grew daikon last season, but never got around to making the pickles. I’ll need to get the tools to can this season, as not only do I want to make the pickles, I also want to start making batches of pasta sauce and preserving my harvest to store and use over the winter.

It’s also about time to start planning and order the trees I want. I’m hoping to get some cold-hardy cherry, peach, apple, plum, and persimmon trees, as well as a couple sugar maples. Peaches will probably be the toughest for me to select, as the ones I enjoy the most need a more temperate climate than what I can offer here. Guess I had better get started on the list…
