Another short one today – we need to drive to the city to pick out a different tub and alcove than the one we had previously picked so our (first) contractor can finish our bathroom. I’ll be glad when that project is finished so we can move on and not deal with him anymore.
That’s the one thing I’m still getting used to about living in a rural area – it’s about an hour drive for any city amenities. Want fast food? An hour away. Need something a bit less common from the grocer? An hour away. Looking for a somewhat specialized part for your house? An hour away. I’m not opposed to the drive, and the benefits of rural life far outweigh this drawback, but it can be frustrating when you just need a plate to cover a network jack or an extension cable for your generator.
But some of that distance is a good thing – I can no longer just decide on fast food for dinner because I don’t want to deal with cooking. Sure, there are some restaurants (really, just bar food) in town, and the club sandwiches they make are pretty tasty, but even then, it’s still at least a 40 minute round trip. This has forced much more cooking at home, and in turn, somewhat healthier eating. It is still a bit difficult for me since I hate cooking for just myself and my wife eats “like a picky 5-year-old” (her words) but we are finding things that she likes other than pasta and pizza.
