Dealing with chronic pain is insanely frustrating. While I’ve gotten better at managing it, and addressing factors that exasperate it, the constant pain signal still overpowers many other aspects of existence. While I much prefer to keep my head as clear as possible by avoiding the drugs they usually prescribe for nerve pain (like lyrica, gabapentin, and amitryptyline) I’m getting to the point where I feel that I just will need to accept taking the stuff that, frankly, makes me dumb. I’ve done pretty well with finding solutions (like the CBD/CBG combo) to make this more bearable, it still is maddening.
I’ve recently been researching the “off-book” uses of DMSO for addressing this. While the research seems to indicate that it could certainly help, it isn’t approved for treating the case I’m dealing with – though many arguments say that is because the FDA is protecting the profits of pharmaceutical companies, as DMSO can’t be patented and marked up 1000% under a Big Pharma monopoly.
This leads me to what I’ve been thinking about the past couple days: why doesn’t the FDA look at all possible treatments instead of just the ones that will profit Big Pharma? Well of course it boils down to money – the FDA gets nearly half its funding from the companies it regulates. And like how Big Tobacco pushes for laws that punish smaller competitors (in particular vape products), Big Pharma doesn’t want more competition either. If it were proven that apricot seeds really can cure cancer, the financial hit the manufacturers of cancer medications would be astronomical.
The healthcare industry today doesn’t exist to cure disease, it is here to slap a bandaid on whatever ails you and get you out the door so you can be a productive drone. Just like how DMSO could be the solution for my issues, but it isn’t approved because the FDA is staffed with a bunch of bitches. They are about control, and it is much easier to control a sick population than a healthy one. They are about profit and don’t want to bite the hand that feeds them (look at ivermectin – another non-patentable drug).
Fundamentally, the FDA’s task (ensuring all food and drug products on the market are safe and effective) is simply too much for them to do properly. Because of this, a “selective prosecution” type situation is created where the FDA will prioritize its focus on what’s the easiest to do (e.g., attacking natural health products that do not have a large corporation behind them or delegating the responsibility for evaluating drugs entirely to a large pharmaceutical company).
So before I resign myself to a lifetime of brain fog and a drop in intelligence, I’m going to look at these alternatives. DMSO looks quite promising, and I think I’m going to try it out.
