I went to town yesterday and gave most of the rest of the plants away. Again, we weren’t selling them but there were people who were insistent that we accept some. One lady even gave $20 when she found out I was just trying to get the entire town gardening – said it was a noble goal and wished me luck next year, though suggested I post on the community Facebook page to let more people know about the project. Hopefully by next year I’ll have a non-profit registered and be able to accept actual donations… and maybe even get products from businesses so I can give away whole container growing kits to people who have limited space. My napkin math tells me I can get the cost of those kits down to around $10/each.
It is a great feeling getting out into the community and doing something that makes a difference. There were a few people who initially balked because they saw others giving some money and they couldn’t afford it, but I was very clear that the plants were all free and they shouldn’t feel like they had to pay something for them. I told each person that the tomatoes are heirloom and how to save the seed for next year. Hopefully I’ll be able to see the whole town with gardens and trading plants and seed.
Maybe I should build a local only social media site to help ween the town off Facebook too…
My clover seed order arrived at the hardware store yesterday too, so today I’ll be seeding the field and setting up sprinklers. Hopefully using the “green manure” technique, I’ll have the field fertile and ready to grow anything in a few years. One of the people that got plants yesterday told me about a company in the city about an hour away that has great prices on bulk compost for fields like this – gonna have to look into that and see if I can cut the field regeneration time down.
Anyhow, lots to do today – see you on Monday!
Interesting Tidbits
I’ve made the longest chain of chewing-gum wrappers in the world – “According to the latest official measurement, my chain is 23.226 miles (37.4km) long. Getting the chain measured is quite an undertaking. Every five years, land surveyors come over, and two witnesses have to independently verify the length.”
Haribo recalls sweets in the Netherlands after traces of cannabis found – where can these be found? You know, for science.
Rep. Steube Introduces Make Autorail Great Again Act to Rebrand DC Metrorail as WMAGA and Trump Train – Instead of fixing the problems and balancing the budget while they have the power to do so, this is the nonsense Republicans are doing right now.
JH Audio Joins Sound Devices – Unless you’re a live music nerd you probably don’t know about these companies, but JHA made the best in-ear monitors (IEMs) on the market. I have some concerns about a drop in quality control, but think this is a strong move for JHA.
Why We Need Community – “For millennia, humans have built fellowship around a fire and a meal. Relationships are built, friendships forged, and bonds solidified. You cannot build trust through online-only interactions. You absolutely MUST meet people face to face.” A good article – I’m bummed I won’t be able to attend the Shield Field Days due to another commitment that weekend.
