The next few days will be all about prepping for the cold snap and first frost this weekend. The forecast says that we’ll be back around 60-70° after this weekend so I think I can squeeze out a couple more weeks of grow time. I really hope so, because my luffa are not quite mature enough for harvest yet. I’ll be throwing sheets on the plants overnight to insulate against the frost. I also have straw bales to use for insulation (though I think one was hay as it’s beginning to sprout).
I need to do some deep watering today and tomorrow – deep enough that it won’t freeze and damage the roots. Really, the luffa is what I’m most worried about – everything else is about done for the season.
I did make pizza again last night, and it turned out better than the night before. I was mainly using up extra ingredients, but made it with a thinner crust and that made a huge difference. There is still work to be done to dial in the recipe, but all in all this was a successful experiment. Perhaps next year I’ll actually get a harvest of San Marzano tomatoes and be able to make sauce from scratch.
Speaking of the San Marzano tomatoes, I don’t think the ones I got this year were even the right variety. The ones currently on the vine are more round, like slicers, while true San Marzano are typically more oblong. I wonder if the nursery had some cross pollination happen, or just mislabeled things.
Anyhow, I need to deep water the garden and get back to emails…
