I had my first bacon, lettuce, and tomato sandwich of the season this morning, and it was divine. I would have yesterday, but realized we didn’t have any good bread left so my wife brought some home from town today. The last heatwave killed off so many tomato flowers that there aren’t many ripening fruit right now, which is frustrating. Since I have so few, I need to attentively save seed so I have enough plants for next season’s giveaway
I also got sidetracked by a kitchen shelving project yesterday and never got around to making my daikon pickles. I had the pieces for the shelves for a while, but had never gotten to the project. While clearing the counter to make room for the pickle prep, I got frustrated and just pulled everything off. I then emptied the contents of the cupboard into a box and just went at it. It took a bit longer than I expected so by the time I finished, I needed to go back to dinner prep and leave the pickles for the time being. At least I have external shelves now to keep our active use cups readily available.
I also called the contractor who did our plant shelves and he will be making new shelves for that cupboard. There’s only one currently in there, and it is that flimsy fiberboard, so nice shelves will be an immediate upgrade. He will also be converting our coat closet into a pantry for us, since we already have a coat rack by the door. That will make food storage much easier (and tidier) and hopefully I’ll be able to implement our food storage database to keep track of everything. The database will make it easier to track expiration dates and what we need to restock when shopping – so we don’t run out of bacon.
The brackets for the new bathroom shelf arrive tomorrow, and I’ll be installing that as well. The narrow litterbox for the bathroom cupboard arrived today so it is perfect timing to get that room organized. We still need to have the tub reinstalled and room repainted (thanks, former contractor) but we are getting there.
Oh, and an aside: we learned that my mother will not be going to Florida to help care for my daughter after all. It seems she made other arrangements and her mother-in-law will be there to take care of the kids. This makes us wonder why the boy needed to come out here at all. If she isn’t sequestering herself from kids, pets, etc – what was the point? We figure it is because she wanted a break from his bullshit and pawned him off on us to get it. I would have gladly agreed to a week for her to have a break, but the deception bothers me. Now we are to the point where he just flat out is not welcome here any longer.
Another aside: I’ve been thinking about posting my recipes here. Nothing close to turning this into a foodie blog, but just posting what I’m making at the time. The main issue is that most of the time I don’t use recipes and just eyeball measurements. I think I’m going to play with some of the recipe plugins and see how they work. Maybe we’ll see some of my grandma’s secret recipes?
Anyhow, I think I want another BLT and that bacon isn’t going to cook itself…
