26.4 pounds – that’s how much daikon radish I was able to harvest over the weekend. Now comes the big project of preparing and pickling it all. I also pulled a bunch of cucumber, a few handfuls of Sun Sugar cherry tomatoes, and even a single Brandywine.
The daikon didn’t come out nice and straight like you usually see at a specialty grocer, and that is likely due to the soil. I have been working it to break up the clay but there is, obviously, still more work to be done. Planting more root vegetables will help that process. Unfortunately, I neglected to harden off the new daikon seedlings and they already have all perished. I may just sow carrot seed and cross my fingers they can break up the clay.
The wild rabbits seemed to enjoy the radish greens I had cut off the daikon. I caught them munching on the pile of them since you don’t want to “chop and drop” radish or compost it when you harvest. Those guys are getting pretty friendly and used to us, though they still won’t feed from my hand. They are so friendly, my neighbor even commented on it after watering the garden while we were away.
I swear I will get them to feed from my hand and come when I call, along with the birds as well. I will become a goddamn Disney princess!
Yeah, we’re naked in the garden…
Overall, it was quite a productive weekend – and I did it all in the buff. I usually water the garden nude to get some full body sun exposure, and this weekend was no exception. It was such a beautiful day on Saturday, I invited my wife to strip down and join me outside while I watered, and she did.
Though there wasn’t much chance of being seen, she was reluctant at first. I get it, it is usually unnerving to walk around naked outside, though she only went topless. I am used to it and really don’t care if a neighbor sees me – they’d have to be trespassing to get a good look anyway. And why have rural property if you can’t garden in the buff?
Well it worked out and she ended up enjoying it – enough that we decided to stay that way all day, and it was quite relaxing. So in addition to my usual nude garden watering, I stayed that way for the harvest as well. We have naturist neighbors down the road and nobody bothers them, so I think we will be just fine.
I hope that this is the start of something new for us, and that she continues to join me for nude gardening. Perhaps I may even be able to convince her to join me fully in the buff next time. But it won’t be this next weekend, as we have the concert and Ren Faire to attend. Hopefully we will enjoy at least another month or so of warm weekends suitable for this activity.
Anyhow, I need to start prepping some chicken for dinner, so…
