Well, the feces hit the ventilation device today.
We’ve been pretty loose with the rules for the boy, but from the beginning there was one explicit rule: do not, under any circumstances, eat my wife’s cookies without express permission. Guess what he was caught doing today?
Yep, the boy ate my wife’s cookies, wrapped the deed in a bullshit story about “helping her” and then ultimately lied about it.
It may seem like an overreaction to a kid stealing cookies, but that was the only line my wife drew on things. So this really isn’t about cookies specifically, but the betrayal of trust and the lying. Worse, for him anyway, his actions and meticulous deception alienated his ally who had previously defended him.
This morning when my wife was leaving for the gym he seemed excited that she would be gone. “You’re leaving for your workout now, right?” he’d asked, seemingly in anticipation of being left unattended in the kitchen. When she returned, he excitedly told her that he “noticed” she was out of cookies so he opened the new box “for her.” Except upon inspection a tube of the cookies was missing.
Now here’s the thing – she had just finished the previous box last night, and there had been five cookies remaining in there for about a week. It is apparent that he had been scouting the cookies to see when he could make his move, because stealing the last few cookies would be pretty obvious. Upon questioning, after lying to my face, he finally admitted that he stole cookies on five different occasions.
So again, this really isn’t about cookies, but his crossing the single boundary my wife had set for him, and he absolutely understood he was doing something he was not supposed to. He betrayed her trust.
Anyhow, we still need to run to town so…
