Saturday started out pretty normally – we went to the local flea market, ran a few errands, got lunch in town, and made it back home in time for the thunderstorm. Since then, it has been constantly raining – most of the time pretty light, but with occasional large cloudbursts. It is still sprinkling today, but I did get out to the garden to trim back some of the foliage from the tomatoes.
The rain put a bit of a damper on on plans for the weekend and this week – I wanted to get the Hügelkultur mound started. I also decided that instead of a traditional birdbath, I want to make a more natural feeling water feature. I figure something small with trickling water down rocks that terminates in a small shallow pool would be perfect. I can shape the mound to provide some shade, in addition to the Japanese maples I want to plant, and the water movement should keep the mosquitoes from using it as a breeding ground. One of the stops we made was a place that sells rock, slate, and cobble, but they also had large boulders and I eyeballed a couple of them that would look quite nice in this landscaping project. Knowing that they just paved over my father’s Japanese garden once the property was sold, I wish I could have saved the boulders from that – transporting them would have been crazy expensive, but the connection would have been nice to have.
Anyhow, the rain has let up and there is a bit of sun right now so I’m going to try to catch up on all the outside stuff…
