Racing the clock to please everyone, all but the one who matters the most…

We were going to make a run to the city today, but it started snowing and it is still coming down. Supposedly it will stop soon and it’s already 40°F so I don’t expect it to stick very long – we’ll be making that run tomorrow.

We had a pretty laid back weekend, but managed to get through the holiday card project as well as finish off Season 2 of Fallout and binged through Season 4 of Lincoln Lawyer. We also watched the Super Bowl and I was glad to see the Seahawks win (though I think the kicker should have been MVP). I don’t follow football (or any sport, really) closely anymore, and my former favorite team, the tRaiders, is dead to me, but I still have an affinity for the Seahawks since my time in Seattle in the 90s.

Speaking of the Super Bowl, my wife got into it a bit with a neighbor on Facebook about the halftime show. They had linked the Kid Rock show and posted something about watching “a real American perform” – I can’t say for certain because apparently the neighbor blocked her for pointing out that Puerto Rico is a US territory and Bad Bunny is a US citizen… and that the only like on the post was the one the OP did themselves.

She was a bit upset by that, but frankly I don’t think it’s that big of a deal. All social media is these days is the constant chase of approval from people to get that little dopamine hit. People seeking out approval from strangers to reinforce their already held beliefs. Wanting to fit in with some tribe of like-minded folk that repeat the same soundbites or share the same memes.

But the problem is that the division is manufactured to keep us all separated and at each other’s throats. Social media companies profit from engagement, and they fuel more engagement by promoting that hostility and division. That acceptance from strangers has a cost, and that is not truly addressing your base needs. They profit, and we all lose.

I’m glad that I’ve been able to stick with giving up social media – it really is a cancer.
