I started this back in 2001 as a bit of an experiment – I wanted to see how a new website would grow and spread without active promotion. I was interested in examining what is now called Search Engine Optimization (SEO). It did pretty well and at its peak, was getting around 75,000 individual visits per day, with occasional spikes if I happened to link something tantalizing (the best day was close to 200,000). This strategy won’t work today with the direction I am taking this.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
This is going to feel old-school because it is going to be done old-school. I’m not going to use AI to create articles that appeal to the new search engine algorithms, I’m not going to create dynamic content designed to catch attention in hopes of being shared. I’m not even putting up the simple “share” buttons to quickly send it to FaceSpace or Twatter. It will take a conscious, intentional action to share this.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
My hope is that this site grows organically by word of mouth like it did during its original run. I would like to see the site grow and become a hub of information and quality discussion that isn’t found in the drive-by attention span environment of social media. If you like a post, there’s no button to click to say so – leave a comment and share the link with someone who would appreciate reading it. That’s the way this site will grow.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Why am I doing this? Because I feel the direction the internet has taken with social media to be detrimental to not just our mental health, but the development of our brains. We walk around with a device in our pockets that can access the sum of the world’s knowledge and have become dependent on that. How many phone numbers do you have memorized? When was the last time you read a book? What media do you consume that isn’t condensed down to bullet points in easily digested short clips or hot takes?<\/p>\n\n\n\n
This is different, this is meant to be filling. This is because I don’t like what has become of the internet and I intend to be the change I want to see.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
